Essential Oils Can Help Attention Deficit Disorder

Attention deficit disorder in children (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactive disorder in adults (ADHD) can manifest with lots of different symptoms. It is estimated that over 8 million adults suffer from some form of ADHD in the United States. This condition can be marked by inattentiveness, difficulty getting work done, procrastination and/or organization problems. Sound familiar? Actually many undiagnosed adults live chaotic lives and try to handle their symptoms with drugs and alcohol. Treatment in children and adults has been with medication and behavior therapy. Can anything from nature be of assistance? YES! Research conducted by Dr. Terry Friedmann MD several years ago used essential oils simply through inhalation with very positive results.

Essential Oils Can Help

In Dr. Friedmann's study, essential oils showed significant results in 60 days in decreasing ADD and ADHD symptoms. The oils he used in his study included vetiver, cedarwood and lavender which he proposed stimulated the limbic system of the brain where emotions are controlled. Vetiver and cedarwood are both high in sesquiterpenes, a compound that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Can they help bring clarity and focused concentration? Many believe they can with daily use. The lavender in his study aided in relaxation. This is actually a great combination of oils. I would recommend inhaling the oils one at a time and if using them on the body, then layering them rather than mixing them into a single blend. Other oils that have been found to be helpful in ADD and ADHD are sandalwood, cardamom, peppermint, and frankincense.

There is some evidence that attention deficit disorder may be caused by mineral deficiencies in the diet. That would make sense since we know that the vitamin and mineral content of our food chain as decreased over the past fifty years. Many believe that by increasing the daily intake of magnesium, potassium and other trace minerals that it can help to resolve ADD. Want to know more about how oils decrease ADD and ADHD symptoms?
