Flip the Switch - Is Motivation All You Need?

Review Summary

Flip the Switch: Lose the Excuses, Lose the Weight and Get the Body You've Always Wanted was written by Jim Karas and is meant to be a motivational book to help people get on the road to weight loss. This author has also written some other self help and weight loss books and claims to have struggled with weight himself. It does not appear that this author has any formal training in exercise or nutrition, but we will still take a closer look at this program to determine if it may benefit dieters.

Book at a Glance

This book does share a lot of the author's personal struggle with weight loss and how he overcame that struggle. While inspiring and interesting, his personal story may not translate to success with others, and people focusing on losing weight may appreciate more guidelines with concrete and proven advice.

Book in Focus

The author does believe that the first step to lasting weight loss is belief in one's self. According to Karas, dieters will continue to fail and yoyo diet until they find this self confidence. In addition to what appears to be very similar to pep talks, Flip the Switch does put forth certain guidelines and rules that dieters should follow while on this program. People following this diet will have to make some lifestyle changes and kick out any unhealthy eating habits.

There are new habits that people can utilize to replace the old, bad ones. The author recommends that dieters keep a daily food log, count all calories and even weigh themselves each day. Of course, these new habits will require dedication and time commitments, but the author claims that when followed properly, such habits will not only document progress but also show when dieters are slipping.

We were able to find a number of independent consumer reviews for this program. Not surprisingly, some people claim that this diet plan led to weight loss success, while others claimed it was useless. Mixed reviews are quite common, but we did notice that none of the positive reviews shared significant weight loss results. Though, there were a few reviews that complained that Flip the Switch was quite boring to read and that some of the rules were confusing to understand and follow.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, this book is pretty basic. While it does put an emphasis on the mental challenges to weight loss, most of its calorie counting and dieting rules are hardly unique and appear very similar to other plans and programs already on the market. Though, people who have tried some of Karas' other books and programs and were satisfied may still be interested in Flip the Switch. In order to determine if this program will really fit a person's diet lifestyle it may be best to read other articles on this subject, some of which can be viewed by following the inks posted below.
